Dental Crowns

If you have teeth weakened by decay or damage, dental crowns can restore the function, comfort, and appearance of your smile. Also known as caps, crowns completely cover teeth after decayed or damaged tissue has been removed. At Derman Dentistry in Lawrenceville, NJ, Dr. Paul Derman provides custom dental crowns designed to provide a long-lasting solution to a compromised smile.

A Versatile Solution

Dr. Derman can use dental crowns to:

  • Strengthen a weakened tooth
  • Restore a damaged or decayed tooth
  • Cover misshapen or disproportionate teeth
  • Conceal severe discoloration
  • Realign an uneven bite
  • Rebuild worn chewing surfaces
  • Protect a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Anchor a traditional dental bridge

Dr. Derman can also attach a crown to a dental implant to replace a single missing tooth.

A Versatile Treatment Option

The treated tooth will be reshaped in order to accommodate a crown.

How Crowns are Made

Tooth treatment and preparation for crowns is typically performed using a local anesthetic, though some patients choose to receive deeper levels of sedation to feel more comfortable.

First, Dr. Derman will perform the treatment necessary to restore the health of your tooth. Next, he will remove additional tissue to ensure that your crown fits comfortably into your smile without appearing bulky or unnatural.

Once your tooth is prepared, we will take an impression and send the information to the lab. Since it can take a week or two for the crown to return, Dr. Derman will place a temporary crown while you wait. During your second appointment, Dr. Derman can remove the temporary crown and then bond the permanent crown to your tooth for a fully restored smile. He will make any adjustments necessary to ensure that your permanent crown fits properly and that your bite feels comfortable.

Whether you need a crown as a cosmetic measure or to restore proper function to your smile, we can help.

Maintaining Your Crown

Dental crowns can last 10 years or more with proper care. There are several ways you can prolong the life of your crown, such as:

  • Brushing twice a day with non-abrasive toothpaste
  • Avoiding very sticky foods, like caramels
  • Avoiding chewing on ice
  • Minimizing alcohol consumption and avoiding alcohol-based mouthwashes
  • Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet
  • Visiting our office twice a year for a checkup

When flossing, you should use a slightly different technique near your crown. Instead of pulling the floss up and down, concentrate on moving it back and forth to avoid catching the underside of your restoration and causing it to become dislodged.

In addition, you should avoid using your teeth as tools to tear plastic packages or trim your nails. Any excessive force can damage your teeth and your crown. If you clench or grind your teeth, we can provide you with a mouth guard to protect your dental crown from wear.
